Bird-Friendly Urban Design Guidelines

  • Calgary’s Bird-Friendly Urban Design guidelines offers design solutions and recommendations for planners, architects, designers, builders, and owners, and acts as a supplementary document to the Centre City Plan, Municipal Development Plan, and Calgary’s Environmental Policy.

  • The Guideline offers readers various bird-friendly strategies that align with the City of Calgary’s sustainability objectives. The guidelines list the following strategies as effective for deterring bird collisions:

    • Treat all glass on the first four (4) storeys to render it visible to birds, or those that are at or below tree height.

    • Create “visual noise” by applying decals, film, or frits, or increase density of mullions or other visual markers using 10cm spacing.

    • Reduce light pollution by integrating Lights Out initiatives or adopting screens/curtains that eliminate light.
