Green Building Standards Code (Voluntary)
- The California Building Standards Commission's (CBSC) highlights Section A5.107 Bird-friendly building design with the following amendments to address “bird-friendly” standards for planning and design of buildings:
- The green building standards states that windows must have no more than 10% glazing on building facades to a height of 40 feet (12 m) or “that of the average height of local tree canopy, whichever is higher; and no more than 40% of facades above that shall be see-through glazing, reflective glazing or acrylic glass.”
- Interior or exterior glazing films must have a pattern visible from the outside conforming to the 2x4 rule.
- Other acceptable treatments include: “laminated glass with 2x4 patterns, patterned UV coating or use of contrasting patterned UV-absorbing and UV reflective films.”
- The green building standards states that windows must have no more than 10% glazing on building facades to a height of 40 feet (12 m) or “that of the average height of local tree canopy, whichever is higher; and no more than 40% of facades above that shall be see-through glazing, reflective glazing or acrylic glass.”
- These design guidelines provide multiple solutions and recommendations for owners, contractors, builders, architects, engineers, and planners that reduce bird collisions, fatalities, and the overall effects of population decline.
