Bird-Friendly Pilot Program for Existing Buildings (Voluntary)
- Amends Section 2-6 (Building construction) of the Cook County Code. The amendment states that all new construction and major renovation projects shall incorporate bird-safe building materials and design features, using recommendations from the City of Chicago’s “Bird-Safe Building Design Guide for New Construction and Renovation,” the City of Toronto’s “Bird-Friendly Development Guidelines,” and New York City Audubon’s “Bird-Safe Building Guidelines.”
- Cook County will also make “existing buildings bird-safe where practicable.”
- The pilot program would implement one or more of the following recommendations on a building: “1) transparent or perforated pattern or non-reflecting window film; 2) painting, etching or temporary coating coalition windows to make them visible to birds; 3) louvers, awnings, sun shades or other shading devices at large expanses of glass to reduce the reflection”.
