Using a community-based approach, the City of Menlo park reviewed changes for the General Plan Update. The plan focused on preserving unique features and benefits of the community while welcoming new development.
The impact report states that the following Bird-Friendly design components may be incorporated into future project permits:
- The building façade must have no more than 10% untreated glazing.
- Bird-friendly glazing, such as opaque glass, paned, fenestration patterned glass, external screens, and patterns may be used to reduce reflection.
- Switchboard or control boards will be programmed to shut off during non-work hours and between 10pm and sunrise to minimize light pollution.
- Avoid development that could create a “funnel” effect for flight paths and prohibit use of transparent glass shall “at the rooflines of buildings, including in conjunction with green roofs.”
