City of Mountain View, CA, USA

North Bayshore Precise Plan, Section 5.2. (Mandatory)

  • Mandatory and optional guidelines will assist in minimizing the adverse “effects on native and migratory birds” by helping contractors, owners, architects, etc., incorporate design measures to promote bird safety.

  • Windows that sit at 0-60 feet above ground must have no more than 10% of untreated glass.

    • Treatments include opaque glass, surface patterns, paned glass that uses fenestration patterns, and external screens.

    • Occupancy sensors can be used to program lights to shut off during non-work hours and between 10pm and sunrise, for non-residential areas.

  • Finally, “The City may waive or reduce any of this chapter’s bird safe design requirements based on analysis by a qualified biologist indicating that proposed construction will not pose a collision hazard to birds.”
