TGS Tier 1 (Mandatory):

Toronto Green Standard Tier 1 Ecology Guidelines

- EC: 4.1 Bird Friendly Glazing: treat a minimum of 85% of all exterior glazing within the first 16 meters of the building above grade, using a combination of the following strategies: visual markers with a maximum spacing of 100 mm x 100 mm, muted reflections, and low reflective, opaque materials.

- EC5.1 Exterior Lighting (Mandatory): Fixtures compliant with Dark Sky lighting.

TGS Tier 2 (Voluntary):

- EC 4.4 Enhanced Bird-Friendly Glazing: A combination of several strategies may be used to treat 95% or more of all exterior glazing that lies within the first 16 meters of the building above grade. A combination of the following strategies may be used:

  • Visual markers with a maximum of 50 mm X 50 mm spacing pattern.

  • Opaque and low reflective materials.

  • Integrated building structures to minimize surface reflections on glass.

- EC4.5 Opaque Building Materials: To further reduce bird collisions, cover at least 50% of the building’s exterior using non-reflective / opaque material.

Bird-Friendly Best- Practices (Voluntary)

  • A supplementary document to the TGS, Toronto’s Best-Practices manual outlines strategies, and answer questions, that pertain to building development and bird collisions.
