TGS Tier 1 (Mandatory):
Toronto Green Standard Tier 1 Ecology Guidelines
- EC: 4.1 Bird Friendly Glazing: treat a minimum of 85% of all exterior glazing within the first 16 meters of the building above grade, using a combination of the following strategies: visual markers with a maximum spacing of 100 mm x 100 mm, muted reflections, and low reflective, opaque materials.
- EC5.1 Exterior Lighting (Mandatory): Fixtures compliant with Dark Sky lighting.
TGS Tier 2 (Voluntary):
- EC 4.4 Enhanced Bird-Friendly Glazing: A combination of several strategies may be used to treat 95% or more of all exterior glazing that lies within the first 16 meters of the building above grade. A combination of the following strategies may be used:
- Visual markers with a maximum of 50 mm X 50 mm spacing pattern.
- Opaque and low reflective materials.
- Integrated building structures to minimize surface reflections on glass.
- EC4.5 Opaque Building Materials: To further reduce bird collisions, cover at least 50% of the building’s exterior using non-reflective / opaque material.
Bird-Friendly Best- Practices (Voluntary)
- A supplementary document to the TGS, Toronto’s Best-Practices manual outlines strategies, and answer questions, that pertain to building development and bird collisions.
