Senate Bill 314: Maryland Sustainable Buildings Act of 2019 (Mandatory)
- The Bill establishes standards for State buildings to help conserve energy and minimize adverse impacts on birds.
- Requirements:
- Any building, whether it is constructed, acquired, or substantially altered by the department, must meet the standards of lighting, glass, etc.
- Transparent glass and/or plexiglass must not make up more than “10% of the exposed facade material from ground level to 40 feet above ground level.”
- Only 40% of the exposed facade material that sits higher than 40 feet may be transparent.
- Advocates for use of secondary materials such as “facades, netting, screens, shutters, or exterior shades; patterned glass containing ultraviolet–reflective or contrasting patterns that are visible to birds.”
- Any building, whether it is constructed, acquired, or substantially altered by the department, must meet the standards of lighting, glass, etc.
